There’s so many ways you can process a photograph from the color vomit of high octane HDR to the minimalistic black and white and no way of processing a photograph is wrong as it’s 100% the artist’s choice. Of course, some are more successful and appealing than others…
Here on phogropathy I wanted to bring a new element of processing photographs to you. While my main focus has been and will certainly remain in the HDR style landscapes I wanted to see if I could also tackle the more classic black and white photographic style. There is surprisingly a lot that goes into black and white conversion and when you dive into a new style of processing photographs there is always going to be a bit of a learning curve.
To help me venture into this process I’ve decided to post a new black and white image each and every Saturday for the foreseeable future. The shot might be one you’ve already seen before reprocessed in black and white or it could be a completely unique image. The only thing that is certain is that you’ll get a black and white photograph from me every Saturday!
So let’s get started…
Today’s Photo – An Old Dead Tree
In rural Georgia there’s really not much else to look at than fields of peanuts, cotton or other various commodities. While they do have more trees there than the middle of the country it’s still very much the same mile after mile.
Of course, every so often you’ll stumble across a random tree like this one and you’ll just have to stop the car and get out to take a couple photographs. I wasn’t sure how I was going to present this shot to you when I took it, but the more I thought about it and the more I looked at it, the more I thought it should be in black and white.
While this photograph is truly black and white – there’s a very small amount of color to it – it’s definitely a very desaturated look. I added the grain over the top of it and all the processing was done using the beta version of Topaz Effects Black and White which is a new photoshop add-on that I’ve had the pleasure of testing out – review will be coming in time.
Anyway – Have a great weekend and if you don’t hear from me in a couple days it could very possibly be that I’ve lost power as Hurricane Irene is heading straight for us here in New England!
