The Dragonfly Watching the Sunset

Good Friday morning everyone hope you all had a nice week and are ready for the weekend!

Sometimes I find photography when I’m not even looking for it. The most important thing to remember when you’re out and about with your camera in hand is to keep your eyes open for everything and anything that could make an interesting shot. Nature photography can’t be scheduled, predicted or even really controlled at all. Sure there are steps to maximize your luck with nature photography, but in the end you’re stuck living to mother nature’s rules.

Today’s Photo – The Dragonfly Watching the Sunset

As I was waiting for the sun to lower further into the horizon I noticed this dragonfly perched on a plant staring, motionless, off into the sun.

I wasn’t prepared to take any close up shots of insects, as I had specifically gone out to capture landscape and sunset photographs, so I left my telephoto lens in the car. Left with my 18-55mm kit lens for this shot I flipped my camera into continuous fire (D3100 get’s about 4 frames per second) and slowly inched myself closer and closer and closer… Eventually it felt like my camera must be about to poke him in the face, but he still held perfectly still for me to fire off a few more shots. The end result you can see below.

All said and done, I gotta say this was one of the easier nature shots I’ve been able to take, even without the long range lens. Just goes to show you that you’ve gotta keep your eyes open and use whatever camera/lens you have accessible to make the most of the situations that arise.

Hope you like it – if you do – please consider sharing it with your friends on Facebook, Twitter and G+! Thanks a bunch :)

  1. Nice shot man. Those 18-55s can get pretty close amazingly.

  2. that is a great shot John!!

  3. Awesome shot. Would like to have seen a touch more of a side angle on it. But it’s really nice. Great face. Great colors :-)

    • Hmm, Yeah I think I agree just a hair more might have been good. I have a lot of shots from behind and a few from almost dead on the side, there might have been one or two that were similar to this, but this one came out the sharpest of the front facing ones :)
