Via dell’Indipendenza from Parco Montagnola

It’s hard to believe how close we are to the end of 2013 – what a year this has been for Phogropathy – what achievements have you had this year in your own photography?

This photograph is probably my favorite from the entire trip. Via dell’Indipendenza is a very popular street in Bologna and on this particular Saturday in the plaza across the street from Parco Montagnola they had a market place set up with dozens of shops selling everything from French wine, hot food, amazing chocolate and just about any spice on you could ever want.

The park is raised above the road which provided a great vantage point of the market as well as the road below. I waited until a surge of traffic was in the frame and fired off this one second exposure. I didn’t have a tripod with me so I was relying on resting the camera on a ledge.

I really wish Jakarta were photogenic like that.
The colour looks beautiful, it’s so serene and calming.

Anyways, you did ask about achievements. My achievement this year is breaking the fear of street photography for the first time.
I know it sounds newbie-ish; for me, it was a breakthrough when I pulled the viewfinder to my eye, pressed the shutter, and took the RAW file home for post-processing. I felt like I leveled up that day.

Yeah it really was a beautiful city to photograph – hope to get back there soon and have another crack at it!

Street photography is something I still struggle with – I’ll do it from time to time – but I’m not by any means confident with it. One of the goals I have for 2014 is to do more of it though and hopefully get better at taking my camera out in the city streets.

You’ll just have to go back, John! :) The image is beautiful. The contrast between the buildings which almost appear as etched with the blur of many colored lights makes the image infinitely interesting and holds my attention.

if all goes well I might get a second trip early next year – fingers crossed :)

Thanks for the kind words – I really do like the way that this one turned out.
