Daily Photo – Wash Me Away

Wash me Away
Another photograph from my trip to the Scituate beach house. I really enjoyed this session of photographing the waves, it’s something I don’t get to do all that often, and it was nice to experiment with longer exposures. As with almost all the other photographs from the ocean I got caught by surprise by a few of the larger waves – it’s so hard to pay attention to things while you’re framing your shot!

Thanks for your visit!

  1. Really love the shot! I recently purchased several Cokin ND Filters in an effort to soften the action of water in general. Would you mind elaborating on the settings you utilized to create the shot?

    Thanks!

    • Hi John! Thanks for the comment.

For this shot I used my hoya ND filter and f/11 to bring the exposure to 0.5 seconds which allowed for the softening of the water. At the ocean you really don’t need much as the waves move so fast and if you can wait until just after the sun goes down you don’t even need the ND filter. If you get a dark enough filter, or wait late enough, you can create the almost fog like look of the water which looks awesome in black and white.

      Thanks for the comment!
